Similar to work on Where the Huckleberries Grow, this project, which involved work on its sequel Even Seagulls Cry, began as an attempt to make books that were no longer in print available to those who continued to have interest in them. Early on, I learned that the author’s files contained only early versions of the manuscripts rather than the more-final version she had published.
I worked with the author to introduce missing sections and portions of sections as well as enter changes in the text that had been made as a result of research during her initial writing of the book. I then provided substantive editing, worked to clarify details about people and place, and incorporated all updated and new information. I scanned and worked with images to ensure the best printing, prepared captions, created an extensive index, did the interior layout, and to the degree possible re-created the original cover with updated information. Prior to setting the work up online so that copies were available for purchase, I obtained a preassigned number from the Library of Congress for the author/self-publisher and prepared a marketing brochure, which the author requested for printing in black and white.
