This project required literature review, field research, and numerous interviews of state-agency personnel. The goal was to provide an overview of the process through which permits for channelizing streams and rivers were granted in the state of Illinois in an attempt to assess the relative effectiveness of the process. For visits to sites at which such work had been completed as a result of earlier permits, I often relied on incomplete maps, some of which were sketched by hand. I owe thanks to a number of local residents who assisted in locating specific areas of stream channels, at times by actually driving and having me follow them to the site.
